有關教師節的來歷,我國歷史上最早出現的教師節是1931年。當時,教育家邰爽秋、程其保等在南京中央大學集會,發表要求“改善教師待遇,保障教師工作和增進教師修養”的宣言,並議定6月6日為教師節,也稱雙六節。不久,國民黨政府先是同意6月6日為教師節,後又將教師節改為8月27日(孔子生日)。

建國後,中央人民政府曾恢復6月6日為教師節,教育部通告各地教育工作者,可以根據實際情況自行組織慶祝活動。1951年全國教育工會成立,教育工作者被確認為工人階級的一部分。1951年4月19日,教育部長和中國教育工會全國委員會主席發表書面談話,宣佈“五一國際勞動節”同時為教師節。但由於這一天缺少教師的特點,執行的結果並不理想。特別是1957年以後,在“左”的思想影響下,教師不受重視,教師節實際上已不再存在。
