20世紀90年代,美國社會的反智情緒高漲,好萊塢於是推出了一批貶低現代文明、崇尚低智商和迴歸原始的影片,美國媒體稱之為“反智電影”。《阿甘正傳》就是這一時期反智電影的代表作,它根據美國作家溫斯頓·格盧姆的同名暢銷小說改編,通過對一個智商為75的智障者生活的描述反映了美國生活的方方面面,並以獨特的角度對美國幾十年來社會政治生活中的重要事件做了展現。它使美國人重新審視國家和個人的過去,重新反省美國人的本質。
