新SAT考試改革後，寫作部分也發生了很大的變化。新SAT中，寫作將從三個方面進行評分：reading(閱讀)，analysis(分析)和writing(寫作)。其中，每一部分都有對應的判分標準，也就是OG提到的scoring rubric. 針對閱讀單項，我們首先看一下4分(advanced)部分reading的評分標準：
The response demonstrates thorough comprehension of the source text.
The response shows an understanding of the text's central ideals and of most important details and how they interrelate, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the text.
The response is free of errors of fact or interpretation with regard to the text.
The response makes skillful use of textual evidence (quotations, paraphrases, or both), demonstrating a complete understanding of the source text.我們把reading評分標準中能呈現在卷面的內容總結下，一個是作者中心思想即central ideal和重要細節important details的體現，以及他們是如何互相聯絡的;其次是fact和evidence的準確體現，體現方式既可以是同義轉述paraphrase，也可以是summarize總結。通過這兩點在essay中的體現，來證明我們對文章是“讀懂”文章的，也就符合了第一點“to demonstrate thorough comprehension of the source text”.
那麼，這要求我們在閱讀文章的時候，著重識別以下重要的資訊，並加以標記：
識別出作者的argument
識別出作者的claim
識別出作者運用的facts/evidence
其次，我們還要夯實自己的同義轉述和總結的功力，並將識別出來的這些點很好的用到我們的essay寫作中。因為篇幅有限，我們僅簡單闡述一下如何識別argument。
Argument指全篇文章都主旨也叫做中心思想，一般作者會用一兩句話表達出來。值得注意的是，prompt本身就是一個可以挖掘中心思想的`地方!比如，在Let There Be Dark這篇範文中，prompt裡就明確表達了作者中心思想。Let There Be Dark的prompt中這樣表述“Write an essay in which you explain how Paul Bogard builds an argument to persuade his audience that natural darkness should be preserved.”很顯然，這裡就道出了作者的argument就是如何persuade his audience that darkness should be preserved.
其次，一般作者的argument都會在introductory paragraph中給出。但這並不意味著，首段一定都會出現argument。有時候作者會在開頭的一段或者兩段給出。從OG給的範文來看，一般來說作者都會將argument置於比較明顯的位置，明顯的位置，即一般會放置在首尾句，但並不排除極少的把argument放在中間的情形。
