On the Chinese-English Translation of Movie Titles

Abstract

Short as the title is, it is nonetheless one of the movie’s essential components and is crucial to its marketing and audience appeal. This thesis analyzes the strategies by which Chinese movie titles have been translated into English. In reference to the advertising and cultural function they are expected to perform, some strategies in movie titles translation, such as informative, aesthetics, commercial value and cultural transformation will be identified. In the meantime, I will also do some comparison between different versions of English movie title translation from different places. Hopefully, this paper will provide some evidence to guide the right principles of movie title translation, thus to help Chinese movie and even Chinese culture to be open to more audiences in the world.

摘  要

電影片名雖短,卻是整部電影的高度濃縮和點睛之處,還是影片能否成功走向國際商業市場,開啟觀眾心靈之門的1把金鑰匙。本文從電影片名的廣告宣傳功能和文化傳播功能談起,通過分析眾多中文電影英語譯名的範例,提出了電影片名翻譯時應該遵循的4個基本策略,即資訊傳遞、美學欣賞、商業價值和文化重構。同時,本文還適當比較了1些不同地區中文電影片名的不同英譯片名的`例項。希望本文所提供的1些相關分析能夠對今後華語電影片名的翻譯起到1定指導,以期能夠幫助更加廣泛地傳播中國的獨特文化。
